I'm Kelsy. I'm a nurse. I work the night shift on a crazy surgical unit and you would not believe the stuff that happens when sick people sleep. To hear more about that and other stories read on....

Scary if you think about it for too long....

The past few days have been full of brain stuff. Boring, but very important. Things like privacy policies, preventing medication errors, and core values of a certain healthcare system. It’s daunting thinking about the possibility of making a mistake. Maybe forgetting my protective goggles, getting splashed with God knows what, and converting to Hepatitis C. Maybe getting in a hurry and making a medication error. Maybe saying too much to a co-worker, violating privacy code, and getting sued. The key is to stay focused, don’t ever rush, and use your brain. I know that if I do those three things I should stay in the free and clear. Keeping my professional career afloat. Yet the fear is still there. I’m sure those nurses out there who have been sued, or have had an issue never thought it would be them, they thought they would be better than that, but in the end we are all human. You can’t ever change that. Humans make mistakes.
Although, for now, I’m going to allow myself to be scared out of my mind so that I never take that human part for granted. Humans make mistakes, but humans can also catch themselves before they make the mistake.

On a lighter note: I saw this bumper sticker on a car the other day…laughed way longer than any normal person, but hey, I’m no normal person, and I’m still laughing about it.

Kels you crack me up! I'm glad you're not a "normal person" but then who really is? The people who think they are normal are only fooling themselves. ;) You'll do great...being aware of your capacity to make mistakes is a huge part to not making them!

OH YES Kelsy that is why I am scared too!! Its healthy to have that uneasy feeling I think it keeps us grounded as nurses and as people. You can never be too confident or cocky because that is when you slip up. I am beginning to have those new butterflies in my tummy too!! I can't wait for our lunch date in a few weeks!
