I'm Kelsy. I'm a nurse. I work the night shift on a crazy surgical unit and you would not believe the stuff that happens when sick people sleep. To hear more about that and other stories read on....

I like lists

1.This week I started working with actual patients. Patients on pain meds. Patients with broken bones. Patients that notice I don’t know what the heck I’m doing...well sorta.

2.I’m really missing home. I forget how much fun it is to meet up with my mom for a day of chatting and coffee. Or going to the old familiar places I would go to waste time. No Barnes and Noble or Target here. What am I supposed to do with my free time? I need those two places, oh and maybe a really cool flower park/garden.

3.Getting a paycheck is fun. I’ve had paychecks before, but I think it’s starting to hit me that I can actually live on this salary. Before it was just to get me through college, but now I can save money….it is so cool.

4.Patients on pain meds say funny things like: “Pooping without pushing is like breakfast with no orange juice” (this coming from a patient who could split his incision if he strained too hard to have a bowel movement...I'm sorry, I couldn’t spare you the details, this one was too good) or “Bring me some of those wafer cookies they make at Mr. and Mrs. Keebler’s farm.”

5.Working a 12.5 hour shift takes it’s toll. Needless to say, I’m sleeping very well at night…wait until I start working night shift.

6.I set up my water bill this week. I had to pay $75 for a deposit, in case I become “delinquent” with my bill. Do they know me? I’m a very responsible person. I will not become “delinquent,” so can I just skip the $75 part? Being a real adult can really stink sometimes.

7.I like being a nurse. It makes me feel good to know that the patient who doesn’t like any other nurses, likes me. I love providing relief to people when they are down on their luck, or to just offer a smile when I coax them into swallowing a large horse pill (pills these days are huge!). I like it. I hope I never get burnt out and treat my patients badly. I hope I can always validate and support them, no matter what the issue.

8.It’s windy tonight, it makes me think there are mice in my house because things keep creaking…maybe there are mice in my house.

I love your list! And if I ever have to go to the hospital, I want you to be my nurse :)

Good list! I thought about you a ton yesterday - Caleb had to be in the hospital and they have the same set up here as they do where you are, so our nurse had him and then some really old patients too! She was great, but I was wishing it could have been you!!
